I have finished sorting through all the photographs from 2011 and have narrowed them down to my favorites. Over the next few posts, I’m going to be highlighting them in each of their own categories.
Today is going to be all about landscape photography. A little over a year ago, I was starting to get the dreaded photography “burn out” and it wasn’t hard to see why. I was basically only taking photos for work and that was it. By the end of wedding season, I was getting seriously close to never wanting to pick up my camera again. I had one of those “ah ha” moments where you see exactly what you did wrong and it was as plain as could be. I was treating photography like a job and not what I originally had intended it to be. What was it that drew me into photography at first? Landscape and nature photography.
Portrait work is all about working fast, dealing with whatever light you have for the 1-2 hours you are scheduled to shoot, and making sure people are comfortable so everyone looks happy in the photos…..which is something I love doing…lots of action and variety.
Landscape work is completely opposite. Everything is about taking time to fight the right location, taking only a handful of photos that count, waiting for the right lighting happen and sometimes hiking miles into the backcountry for somewhat secret locations. If I can get 1 photo I like from a shoot, it would be a tremendous success. If I get skunked, I still had a relaxing venture outside.
So this past year, I took time off every week to slow down and take photos for fun. It made all the difference and the rest of my photography benefited from it as well….plus I have some new art on my walls that I can enjoy year round
.
take a look at some of these and let me know what you think
