Ah Technology. . . .

One of the many benefits of building your own computers is that you generally know how to repair them when stuff goes wrong.   On Friday night, I was in the middle of uploading some photos to my online proofing area when my graphics card junked out on me.  I figured that was the problem right away, but it was late in the evening and now I had to wait until morning when MicroCenter would open to get a new one.  Thankfully, I had been working my tail off all week to get some editing done and the forced night off from anything super important was a little bit of relief.  This left me with a bit of a dilemma though…do I buy a cheap one and just get me by, or do I buy a nicer one that I can use in a new computer build I have planned for this summer.

In keep with my style…..I went with the nicer one and I’m totally glad I did.  So now I’m back in business again and have no excuses for farting around today.

The old junked one on the left, the new fast one on the right.  When I bought it, I didn’t realize the size difference was that much..but I have a pretty beefy case, so no problems there.

Linh and Evan: Anti-Bridal Shoot In Minneapolis

Just before the snow started to fall this past late autumn, I met up with Linh and Evan to spend a little time doing some fun shots in Minneapolis.  We met about an hour before dusk and then shot into the night.  Linh was a really good sport about the freezing temps and pretended to look warm.   Anti-Bridals are such a great time and we basically just did what we wanted the entire time.  Check out a sampling of our shoot and enjoy

Ashley and Jason: Engagement

I had such a great time meeting with Ashley and Jason that I wanted to share a few of the highlights from their engagement session this past fall.  Thankfully neither of them were afraid of heights as we ventured out on this old railroad bridge that was a little sketchy.  It made for great photos though…so well worth it.

Jon and Tamara Engagement

Jon and Tamera met up with me this past October for a great Autumn Engagement shoot in the town of Stillwater.  We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect autumn day to spend taking photos and was very happy with how the photos turned out.  Their wedding is this June and I’m sure it will be here before we know it.

Rebecca and Stanton: October 10th, 2009

This past October I met up with Stanton and Rebecca out at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum for absolutely incredible wedding day.  To make it even more interesting, it snowed the night before their big day.  Stanton had just moved to Minnesota from South Africa and had never seen snow first hand before…so to have snow was a real treat for him and his family.   Looking at the photos from the day, you’d hardly know that it was in the low 40’s when we were out taking photos.   I had such a fun time and couldn’t wait to get home to start editing the photos out for them.

Cody & Marie: September 5th, 2009

As I have now begin to emerge from my pile of editing, I figure I should highlight some of my favorite photos from weddings that I had the pleasure to be a part of the past few months.

First off….. Cody and Marie.

Cody and Marie’s wedding was set in their hometown of Sauk Centre on one of the best day of September.  Seriously…you could not have asked for a more perfect day for photos. We had nice blue skies with awesome puffy clouds…warm temps, a slight breeze and all the plants were really lush from the rain we had been getting all summer.  Rachel and I had such a fun time  with everyone and I particularly loved the really good dessert shooters they were serving at the reception…A+ in my book.

Thank you Cody and Marie for having Rachel and I along to share on your most excellent wedding day.  I hope you have enjoyed your photos as much I enjoyed taking them.

Getting all organized….and a fancy new blog

It took a good month of burning the candle at both ends to get caught up on all sorts of things that somehow overwhelmed me like a crashing wave.  The makers of Monster, Redbull and Amp energy drinks have been reaping the profits of my all night editing sessions and I can honestly say that I don’t want to touch another energy drink for a long time now.  2009 has been an unbelievable year of growth for me and I feel incredibly blessed to have met so many awesome people over the course of the past 12 months.  Never would I have thought that  I would be self employed as a full time photographer AND get to be a stay at home dad with my two amazing little girls.  I am truly thankful for those that have gone out of their way to help me as much as you have.

I have one more wedding on the 11th of December that I have been really looking forward to.  The bride is an old friend of both my wife and I from our high school days and I am crossing my fingers for a little bit of snow for cool December wedding.

I made a promise to myself that I would try to get to bed before midnight everynight so I would have enough energy for the day ahead with my girls…..and now that I see it is 2:21am, I should probably try to get at least 4 hours of sleep before Hannah and Grace decide it’s breakfast time.

Stay tuned for a ton of new content coming soon.

First snow of the year

Three weekends ago, we hearty folks living in Minnesota, had our first snow of the year.  I had a couple hours free that morning, so we had a family fun day in the snow.   Last year Grace had a hard time moving around in her snow suit, but this year she had no problem.  I am really looking forward to all the winter fun we are going to have as a family.

I was pulled over running a red light . . .

I can honestly say that I have never received a ticket and I have only been pulled over 2 times…first  for having my trailer lights go out and second for giving some drunk friends a ride home on a cold winter night and the police were just targeting people.   Anyways… I am a good driver most of the time and when I am not it usually involves trying to keep up with party bus drivers who don’t feel the need to obey traffic laws.

So four weekends ago, I was shooting a incredible wedding over in Oakdale, MN and they had a party bus taking them over to the reception venue in Saint Paul.   We were going to stop at parks that weren’t busy along the way to take the fun creative shots. Since the parks in Saint Paul are often filled with other wedding parties,  I wasn’t really sure where we were going and in what order.   So I needed to stay with the bus at all costs.

Well this driver has a thing for running red lights….not once, not twice, but three times. And on the third red-light-run that I followed him through, I was tagged by a police officer.   It’s not the cops fault, I ran the light fair and square.   So I pulled over in one of those little corner convenience stores that are rather common in urban area’s and the officer walks up to my car. I quickly explain that I am the photographer for a wedding party that was in the bus in front of me and I really need to get back to them ASAP.   I fully expected to get the ticket and I just wanted him to hurry up and give it to me. By this time, the bus was easily a good mile or two down a road that has stoplights every block. Instead of giving me the ticket, he runs back to his car and says he’ll clear the way for me. He then turns on his lights and sirens and we go flying down the road.

So I got a sweet police escort through Saint Paul and I didn’t have to pay a big ticket. Total rockstar move by that guy and easily one of the highlights of my year.

yeah… everyone on the bus was pretty stoked to see me come flying up with the cop.

Shawna and Mike's E-shoot

I love the city of Duluth and when Shawna asked me to meet them up there for an engagement shoot, I was so excited.   What I didn’t expect was the crazy weather we had when we were up there.   As soon as I rolled in I was kinda shocked to see …. nothing! There was a thick fog everywhere and pretty much blocked the entire waterfront and most of the lower city from view.

Fog steals the color and contrast out of photos and makes everything a bit more interesting as you really can’t use much flash.  All you can really do is embrace the conditions and have as much fun as you can. The fog did eventually lift for use and it turned into being a really awesome day.
