Landscape: Favorite Landscape Photos of 2011

I have finished sorting through all the photographs from 2011 and have narrowed them down to my favorites. Over the next few posts, I’m going to be highlighting them in each of their own categories.

Today is going to be all about landscape photography. A little over a year ago, I was starting to get the dreaded photography “burn out” and it wasn’t hard to see why.  I was basically only taking photos for work and that was it. By the end of wedding season, I was getting seriously close to never wanting to pick up my camera again.  I had one of those “ah ha” moments where you see exactly what you did wrong and it was as plain as could be. I was treating photography like a job and not what I originally had intended it to be.   What was it that drew me into photography at first? Landscape and nature photography.

Portrait work is all about working fast, dealing with whatever light you have for the 1-2 hours you are scheduled to shoot, and making sure people are comfortable so everyone looks happy in the photos…..which is something I love doing…lots of action and variety.

Landscape work is completely opposite. Everything is about taking time to fight the right location, taking only a handful of photos that count, waiting for the right lighting happen and sometimes hiking miles into the backcountry for somewhat secret locations. If I can get 1 photo I like from a shoot, it would be a tremendous success. If I get skunked, I still had a relaxing venture outside.

So this past year, I took time off every week to slow down and take photos for fun.  It made all the difference and the rest of my photography benefited from it as well….plus I have some new art on my walls that I can enjoy year round:).

take a look at some of these and let me know what you think

Way to get back to the fun of shooting. Glad you didn’t get burnt out. Great photo’s as always. You have extreme talent!

Engagement: Tiffany and Jon

Around the middle of October, I received a call from Tiffany about booking a photographer for her wedding and also trying to fit in an engagement session before the leaves had completely fallen from the trees.  I am excited to say that I was able to help them out with both of  these and we found a location up in Rogers that still had some leaves left at the end of October for their engagement session.  When I had initially spoke with Tiffany on the phone, she had mentioned that Jon would probably be on crutches still from a leg injury,  so we’ll have to make something work.  I wasn’t sure exactly that meant, but Jon was far from immobile and quite honestly, he was more mobile then some perfectly healthy people I have worked with in the past. So this makes me wonder how awesome he’s going to be come their wedding this summer.

Here is a sampling of their e-shoot with me on was basically a perfect autumn day.

Family: Adam & Anne + Silas

This past autumn, I met up again with Adam & Anne and their son Silas for a fun family session out in the leaves. He was a little shy at first and I don’t think he remembered me from the previous family session, but warmed up to the idea of having his photo taken and we goofed around for a good 45 minutes with him. I am really starting to look forward to all the warmth and color that spring will bring in a few months.  In the mean time, we could probably use a few inches of snow to make things pretty again.

Tony and Kristi’s Wedding at Stone Ridge Golf Club

I’m trying to get all caught up on my blog posts over the next month and it’s been nice to revisit some fantastic weddings from this past year.

Today’s featured wedding is of Kristi & Tony and their gorgeous wedding out at the Stone Ridge Golf Club.  I had such a great time with the both of them on their engagement shoot, I was really looking forward to spending the day with them for their wedding.  We had been a little worried about the rain and we did get hit with some throughout the day, but it worked out well in the end and I couldn’t have been more happy with the results.

Enjoy!
